Second Life (Sculpted Prim) Export
Sculpted Prim Exporter makes it possible to export individual Sculpted Prim objects for use in Linden Lab's 3D virtual world Second Life.
About Sculpted Prim
Sculpted Prim is a primitives format that can create objects in Second Life.
Sculpted Prim uses image formats called Sculpt Textures and Sculpt Maps as textures that can be uploaded to Second Life.
Using Sculpted Prim Exporter
- Select File > Export > Second Life Sculpted Prim to open the export dialog box. Export options can be specified here.
- Clicking the OK button after making any necessary changes will bring up a Save dialog in which a file name and destination can be chosen.
Text data, which contains the necessary information and scripts for building the object in Second Life (such as the file size and position), and Sculpt Map data (.bmp) are exported.Note The nature of Sculpted Prim is such that complex objects cannot be expressed by one Sculpted Prim. Instead, a Sculpt Map is exported for each part. In order to use the limited resolution of each part's Sculpt Map efficiently, the size of each Sculpted Prim in Second Life varies. Because the number of vertices will be converted to the resolution of the exported Sculpt Map image, the position of vertices is sometimes interpolated.
Export Dialog Box
The following options are available when exporting to Sculpted Prim.
- Basic Settings
-
- Text File Pop-up Menu
- This option is not used in Sculpted Prim Exporter.
- Output Pop-up Menu
- Select either Selected Objects or All Objects to export.Choosing Selected Objects will export only the objects selected in the Browser.
Choosing All Objects will export all the objects in the scene. - Surface Subdivision Pop-up Menu
- This option is not used in Sculpted Prim Exporter.
- Binary / Text Pop-up Menu
- This option is not used in Sculpted Prim Exporter.
- Surface Attributes Checkbox
- This option is not used in Sculpted Prim Exporter.

- Map Resolution
- Specifies the resolution of the exported maps. Select either 64x64 (recommended) or 128x128.
Note Because each RGB value has 8 bits per pixel, the coordinates of each pixel are limited to 256 steps along each axis. In other words, a 1 meter object will only have about 4 mm of resolution. 64x64 is recommended for the number of vertices (equal to the number of pixels in the Sculpt Map). Because the object is handled as an image, it must be in a grid.
- Flip Horizontal
- Flips the Sculpt Map horizontally.

Notes & Precautions
- Depending on the object, the Sculpted Prim may be inside-out in Second Life. (It may appear transparent when viewed from the outside, and only visible when viewed from the inside.) If that happens, select the Flip Horizontally checkbox in the export dialog. However, note that when selecting this option all the exported Sculpted Maps will be flipped. Because a Sculpt Map is an image file, the same results can be achieved by flipping the image in an image editing application.
- Sculpted Prims tend to have a nicer shape when the top and bottom of the Sculpt Map is at the poles of a sphere. Sculpt Maps that converge at the left and ride sides often result in less natural-looking objects. If that happens, try rotating the Sculpt Map 90 degrees in an image-editing application.
- The file export path and file name must use only latin characters.
